Taoism is an ancient Chinese philosophy that postulates there is a universal and unifying principle called the Tao, or “Way” that governs the natural world. The Tao is the 'unity' underlying all multiplicity, the 'singularity' behind all plurality, and the 'oneness' behind all particular things. The Tao is the essential flow of the universe, is whole, and indivisible. It is the influence that keeps the universe balanced and nature ordered.
The Tao manifests itself in the harmony of things, and accessible to those who live in accord with the world’s natural order. Taoists seek to understand and live in communion with "The Way" of nature, and look to cultivate tranquility, spontaneity, compassion, and spiritual insight.
Like other Eastern philosophies such as Hinduism, Taoists practice meditation, breath control, and dietary means of enhancing life and increasing spiritual awareness. Taoists believe that learning and practicing “The Way” (Tao) is the ultimate truth to the universe. All else belongs to the fragmented realm of illusion!
To Taoists, an individual who lives in accord with the Tao can be likened to a small branch that effortlessly flows along on the shoulders of a mighty river, while an individual who lives against the Tao can be likened to a champion swimmer who swims against the river, and therefore, goes nowhere!
