Pythagoras' understanding of number, proportion, and music eventually extended to his explanations about the Universe. He believed that there was ultimately a pre-established Order and Harmony to the Cosmos, due to the fact that its measures were based in mathematics.
Pythagoras explained that the distant Sun, Moon, planets, and stars all revolved around the earth in orderly fashion because they were 'fixed' within celestial spheres, each of which was a different distance from the earth. These celestial spheres were concentric, of different size, and composed of an ethereal substance that was invisible to the eye. They had also been eternally set into motion by a Perfect Being that existed beyond the physical Universe from the beginning of time.
Like musical intervals, the spheres were related by number and mathematical proportion, and were perpetually in motion. Their motion resonated a harmonic sound throughout the universe, what the Greeks referred to as the "Music of the Spheres".
According to Pythagoras, through the process of re-incarnation, the ultimate goal of the soul is to purify itself through various lifetimes, so that it can eventually grasp the sound of this Universal Harmony. It can be stated that classical composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven have in different degrees achieved this sublime goal.
